| Description: | Abstract: The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is considered the driest desert on Earth, nevertheless traces of life and soil formation have been observed at several places (Fletcher et al., 2012). Patchy occurrence of organic matter in the Atacama desert topsoil has been suggested in earlier studies (Valdivia-Silva et al., 2012, Fletcher et al., 2012). Furthermore, depending on intensity of the aridity other differences in soil properties (e.g. soil carbonates content) have been observed (Quade et al., 2007). |
