Title: | Main Title: Investigations on cacti associated protists of the Atacama Desert |
Description: | Abstract: The harsh conditions dominating the Atacama Desert in northern Chile lead to speciation of endemic plants and isolation of plant populations due to water restriction. As plants form their own microbiome, it can be assumed that the restricted gene flow in isolated plant populations has an impact on the community of microorganisms. Within the microbiome, the paraphyletic group of heterotrophic protists account for a considerable fraction. Hypothetically, the evolution of new protist species associated to endemic plants is supported by their short generation time leading to rapid fixation of mutations and, thus, speciation. However, the prevalence of endemic protists associated to endemic plants has not yet been proven. In this study, thirteen different protist strains from three isolated cacti populations were investigated and morphologically and molecularly identified. Additionally, the strains were analysed in a phylogenetical context. Six cercozoan and four colpodid ciliates, as well as one Vahlkampfidea, one Phalansteriida and one Theacofilosea strain were isolated and described on the basis of morphological and molecular data. Several protists of the same species were not found on different plant species, supporting the idea of endemic protists associated to specific cacti. In addition, cosmopolitan species could be observed. The results of this study indicate, that potentially endemic protists exist in the Atacama Desert associated to cacti. To verify this hypothesis, the sampling effort should be intensified worldwide, especially in remote areas with isolated plant populations, like the Atacama Desert. |
