Title:Main Title: Studies on the diversity of protists in the coastal region of northern Chile
Description:Abstract: Protists are microscopic organisms, which are non-related. This group includes protozoa, some eukaryotes with only a few cells, algae and some fungi. Because of their crucial role in the aquatic and terrestrial carbon flow as primary producers, phagotrophs and remineralizers, this study focuses on protists. Due to the fact that protists can live in extreme habitats, we took samples in the coastal region of northern Chile. We aim to understand the genetical and geographical evolution of protists, inhabiting high altitude salars in the Andes, who originated from the south Pacific coast of Chile. At the sampling locations, in the coastal region, rock pool samples were taken, with salinities up to over 300 PSU (Practical Salinity Unit). These high salinities are equal to some of the salars in the Andes. The study supports the assumption, that protists of the salars in the Atacama Desert origins from the ocean.
