Title:Main Title: Research on the diversity of protists in salars of the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile
Description:Abstract: The main goal of this study was to investigate the diversity of heterotrophic protists in extreme habitats of the Atacama region (Chile), regarding the distribution and possible separated evolutionary processes. There is still little known about the evolution of heterotrophic protists but they are fast growing organisms and thus potentially fast evolving. The samples used for this study, were collected from several salars, one river and one rockpool in the Atacama Desert during the expeditions to Chile in March 2015 and 2017. In order to investigate the phylogenetic relationships, the strains were isolated, the small subunit DNA (SSU rDNA) was sequenced and phylogenetic trees were built. It was possible to isolate nine flagellates, three ciliates and one amoeba. The analysis of the molecular data revealed that two of the isolated cercozoan strains seem to appear in other places of the earth as well, like in Denmark and Germany. This suggests that the distribution of protists from extreme habitats to other places on earth could be possible. However the other 11 strains could possibly represent new species which have not been described yet. Parts of the study might give some support for the hypothesis that the evolution rate within one salar could be higher than the exchange rate between two different extreme habitats. The formation of specific populations within the salars could not be confirmed because only a very low number of protists could be investigated during this study. Regarding the distribution of the protists within the Atacama Desert, there was one strain found in three different salars which supports the idea of a possible exchange between the salars. To ensure the results and to get further knowledge, additional genes of the DNA of the protists should be studied and more strains should be isolated in future studies.
