Title:Main Title: Pléiades DEM-based morphometry of coastal alluvial fans in Chile's Atacama Desert - DEM quality assessment and first results from the Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo), southern Tarapacá region
Description:Abstract: Revealed by sedimentary records dating back to the late Jurassic (150 Ma) the Atacama Desert is the oldest desert known on earth. Within the scope of the CRC 1211 “Earth – Evolution at the dry limit“ the subproject C02 concentrates on transport and deposition under the long-lasting hyperarid conditions present in the Atacama Desert with a special focus on coastal alluvial fans. These sedimentary geo-archives mirror the past and present circumstances controlling their evolution; which are, besides the climatic influences, tectonic controls and sea level changes. Thus, remote sensing-based geomorphological analysis can contribute to the discovery of the processes involved in their development. The 1 m Pléiades DEM derived from stereopair imagery gives, if downscaled and filtered, a sufficient impression on the regional surface elevation and can be used successfully for the assessment of drainage basins and stream networks, but is unsuitable for further morphometric analysis. Probably, the Pléiades tri-stereo imagery products could provide a less erroneous DEM and, therefore, should be examined and compared.
