| Description: | Abstract: Mean annual precipitation 1) from the TRMM-3B42 satellite retrieval for the year 2018 (colorshading), 2) from the ground stations used in Houston and Hartley (2003) showing data from 1977-1991 (colored circles) and 3) as observed by the Dry-Limit climate station network during 2018, its 1rst complete year (colored diamonds). Note the logarithmic scale (Fig 10 from Special Issue paper). The satellite product captures the *general structure* with higher recipitation above the Altiplano, a clear decrease of precipitation with decreasing altitude towards low values above the central epression. But it also shows *higher precipitation rates* above the cordillera costal. Climate station data from Houston and Hartley (2003) as well as data from the stations discussed here show in general lower precipitation rates especially in the central depression and the Cordillera Costal. The differences are typically on the *order of one magnitude* but can reach two magnitudes in the Cordillera Costal. A cloud radar installed 2018-2019 within the CRC1211 at the Iquique Airport showed several cases of precipitation not reaching the ground. Thus we believe that this bias might be due to precipitation evaporating before reaching the ground. |
