Title:Main Title: C02 - Coastal alluvial fan catchments and streams (geodata)
Description:Abstract: This file encompasses two ESRI shapefiles. "CAF_catchments_C02.shp" contains 123 polygons representing the catchments of the coastal alluvial fans (CAF) of the Atacama Desert between ~20.5°S and 25.5°S which were used by Walk et al. (in press) for hydrogeomorphometric analyses. "CAF_streams_C02.shp" contains all DEM-based, delineated streams within these catchment areas as polylines. The delineation of the CAF catchments and streams was conducted based on the TanDEM-X WorldDEM™ using a z fill limit of 10 m and a flow accumulation limit of 500 cells. Only CAF-catchment systems with a catchment area above 1 km² were considered for this study. Since the TanDEM-X WorldDEM™ is characterized by errors due to artefacts in the upper parts of the western flank of the Coastal Cordillera, a quality control was carried out for each CAF catchment system. None of the CAF are affected but several catchments; in particular, in the north between ~21.8°S and ~22.6°S. Any catchment with artefacts affecting >4% of its area, >2% of its area missing due to artefacts, or more than one stream interruption due to artefacts were excluded. In total, 123 of originally 160 CAF and their catchments were analysed. Accordingly, the mapped CAF were selected for morphometric analyses (cf. geodataset "C02 - CAF (geodata)"). See Walk et al. (in press) for details. Walk, J., Stauch, G., Reyers, M., Vásquez, P., Sepúlveda, F.A., Bartz, M., Hoffmeister, D., Brückner, H., Lehmkuhl, F., in press.
