Title:Main Title: Studies on the diversity of protists in aquatic systems of the Atacama and Altiplano region
Description:Abstract: The Atacama and Altiplano region in northern Chile represent one of the most unique ecosystem worldwide especially the athalassohaline environment, inhabited by unicellular eukaryotes (protists). However, only a few diversity and distribution studies on heterotrophic protists, living in these extreme habitats, are existing. In this study, five sampling sites in northern Chile were sampled. In total, twelve monocultures were isolated to investigate the phylogenetic relationships between the taxa and compared to isolates of other locations in the Atacama Desert and the available sequences in GenBank, thereby to identify potentially yet undescribed species. The performed morphological and phylogenetical analyses, based on the small subunit (SSU) rDNA, revealed five known species (four Placidida and one Percolomonas) and pointed on seven species unknown to science. Among these species three potentially new genera were identified. During the present study, the first non-marine Cafeteria- and Caecitellus- like species were isolated, each from different habitats of the Atacama Desert. These strains have a high genetic pairwise distance (p-distance) to all other known isolates of marine sequences, indicate that evolutionary processes took place many million years ago. Due to the results of the present study, it might be assumed that important evolutionary processes are requirable to adapt and inhabit on athalassohaline environments.
