| Title: | Main Title: Distribution and activity of bacteria in the Atacama Desert |
| Description: | Abstract: First results on distribution and activity of bacteria in the Atacama Desert, as presented at the CRC-Meeting in Febraury 2018. We are investigating the distribution and activity of bacteria in different habitats in the Atacama Desert. Such habitats can be found in soil and biocrusts, but bacteria can also occur in association with macroorganisms, such as plant or insect hosts. Our main goals are to understand how bacterial life changes under different water availabilities and how these affect distribution patterns. Initial analyses of phllyosphere bacterial communities of Tillandsia landbeckii and Ophryosporus triangularis revealed overall low colonisation rates and little variation in community composition across sites. However, differences between the two plant hosts were observed. Bacterial respiration after ex situ irrigation of soils collected from an aridity gradient reveal overall low respiration rates, but differences between different soil sampling depths were detected. Analyses will be extended to cover more sampling sites and habitats. Furthermore, DNA-SIP will be established to track bacterial taxa that are re-activated upon soil wetting. |
