Title:Main Title: Compilation of regional geological maps (original maps and compiled shapefiles) of the western Atacama Desert (20°S–25.5°S, N Chile)
Description:Abstract: This dataset contains 13 regional geological maps of the western Coastal Cordillera and coast of the Atacama Desert between 20°S-25.5°S. The following original maps are provided: (1) Sepúlveda/ Vásquez (2012): Mapa geológico de Iquique, Regíon de Tarapacá. Escala 1:100000. For full references, please check the documentation included in the compiled file folder. While the maps no. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, and 13 are provided as shapefiles stored in geodatabases (.gdb) compatible for ESRI ArcGIS software (including the mxd-files), the map no. 6 is stored as a jpg-file and maps no. 8 and 11 are available as vectorised pdfs (8 and 11). Moreover, those 13 maps were merged into one shapefile (.shp) for the bedrock geology (polygon features) and faults (line features) each. In parts, bedrock polygons extending over different maps were merged and, in case the geological codes between such bordering polygons differed due to obvious reasons related to different authors/editors, the geological codes were unified. Reattribution of geological codes was done based on background geological documentations and publications. In addition, the compilation contains a shapefile designating the source maps and a documentation. Note that compiled bedrock geology is stored under “Code” in the attribute table of the bedrock geology shapefile. Explanations of the codes are partly given in “Unidad_g_1”, “DEFINICION”, and/or “NOMBRE”. However, the full meaning of the attribute “Code” needs to be looked up in the legends of the original maps. The bedrock geology shapefile further contains an additional attribute “Petr_Cl_1” summarizing the bedrock lithology into 10 classes. The meaning of the codes in “Petr_Cl_1” and the reclassification procedure are summarized in a separate xlsx-file. The merged bedrock geology and faults are projected into WGS 1984 UTM Zone 19S (EPSG: 32719). This compilation and reclassification of the bedrock geology has been done as part of the following publication: Walk, J., Stauch, G., Reyers, M., Vásquez, P., Sepúlveda, F.A., Bartz, M., Hoffmeister, D., Brückner, H., Lehmkuhl, F., 2020. Gradients in climate, geology, and topography affecting coastal alluvial fan morphodynamics in hyperarid regions – The Atacama perspective. Global and Planetary Change 185, 102994. doi:10.1016/j.gloplacha.2019.102994
Citation Advice:Please quote the individual maps accordingly, also when the compiled map data is used. Full references for the maps are provided in the included documentation.
